On Friday, March 6th, multi-talented pianist Freddie Ravel was honored for exceptional achievement by the City of Los Angeles at the Los Angeles City Council meeting. The recognition of the Grammy nominated pianist was tops on the meeting agenda. His exceptional philanthropic work in the community through his program, “Tune Up To Success,” has helped many organizations, including the City of Hope. “Just by having a heartbeat, like a drummer, music runs inside all of us,” said Ravel as he accepted his award. Among the luminaries in attendance were Eric Garcetti and Councilwoman Wendy Greuel.

Ravel, whose roots are in Los Angeles, was particularly proud of receiving the award. “It’s a profound honor because it’s from my hometown,” said Ravel, who attended Cal State Northridge. “I was born ten miles from where we’re standing right now (Van Nuys City Hall). This is the place where my parents met in Los Angeles and my roots are here. So it has a special meaning for me as a hometown sort of guy. I also believe that Los Angeles has been, more than any city in the world, the voice of music and the arts, which this city represents. That kind of adds the special feeling I’m feeling about all this today to receive that recognition in context. I’m very humbled by the experience.”

Freddie Ravel has worked with many of the icons of the industry, including Madonna, Quincy Jones, Earth, Wind and Fire, Herbie Hancock and Prince among others. His commitment to the community is evident through his performance program, “Tune Up To Success,” which reveals how music connects and empowers lives. He has worked with George Benson and Al Jarreau, contributing the title track “Givin’ it Up, to their CD project, which has garnered several Grammy Awards. Ravel believes in the power of the human spirit and the environment of nurturing and listening. “The main point I wanted to leave with the City Council today was that when you look at all the studies on the art of listening, what makes us amazing listeners –the skill to obtain is the word empathy,” he said. “If you have empathy in your heart, you become a master listener and you become open to receive all the gifts that are around us all the time.”
